Wave #1: Mashups

Sometimes, music has its own (math) rules:
[for example] >> 1+1=2+x (x>0)
... Adding one awesome song to another doesn't equal something that's as good as the values of both songs combined. It's more!

The songs don't necessarily need to harmonize perfectly. They don't need to have the same pitch. And - most importantly - they don't need be about the same thing. Style and content of what is said/sung can differ extremely and the outcome can still be amazing! Here are some examples:

Black Eyed Peas Vs Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You To Shut Up

MGMT Vs Snow Patrol - Chasing Kids

Massive Attack Vs Portishead - Teardrop on Roads

Amy Winehouse Vs The Killers - Mr. Rehabside

Duffy Vs The Police - Mercy For Roxanne

Adele Vs Gnarls Barkley - Crazy In The Deep

The Essence of "Maximiwax"...

After getting to know how people think about my (")blog("), I wondered whether I was going into the right direction... I started this blog in order to continue what I did with my Youtube channel - presenting new artists, new sounds, new genres and just my taste in music. And I wanted to do what everybody else does: headline, short text, links. Done. With my own little twist, of course...
But now I feel like it needs a bit more than that. Concepts, themes, generally something that gives direction to every post I make... Adding personal information, thoughts and a bit of my awesomeness and BAM! - there you have it: a strong dose of MAXIMIWAX!! O.O (As regards to risks and side-effects, ask your doctor or pharmacist...)
So let me introduce you to the main essence of what my music taste is all about - just to make sure what the following posts will or might look like...

...From soft and quiet to hard and heavy...

I love Agnes Obel's calming voice and her soothing sounds. Her use of the piano and how the accords of sounds make you feel is spot on. This remix takes her music's nature and creates a wonderful moment of trance ...

Only around 2 and a half minutes long is the next track that has waited for years in my "music stock" - gathering imaginary dust - just to be found again at this very moment! I found it because of a dancing video of one of the episodes of SYTYCD ... rather strange way to find music, huh? ;)

Well, finally something more up-beat!! I don't really know how to describe what it is that makes me love this song so much, but some of the sounds remind me of a summer vacation on a lonely island with friendly natives :D ... And the bridge between 1:30 and 2:20 is awesome!!

I'm totally against smoking. I hate the smell on my clothes, I hate it when people blow their smoke right into my face and I don't get why people spend so much money on worsening their lives. But I really dig this song and its video. Could be a cigarette commercial, right? :D

What would maximiwax be without a bit of "The Yeah Yeah Yeahs"?? Remixed by Ryan Nexus this tune can make you dance or push you to your limits when you have your next workout-session ;)

That's it for now, guys... have a nice weekend ;)

"Good" Mainstream...

There's a song and you LOVE it. You're the only one you know who has ever heard of this song - it's brilliant, amazing, your favorite! Weeks or months later, you notice that the song is spreading 'round the Internet and soon you can even hear it on the radio! What the f§#% happened?!?

You know that situation, right? ;) And sometimes you even lose interest in that song or the artist, just because the rest of the world knows it too... Do they appreciate it as much as you do? The sound, the message, the FEELING? ... I always hated it to realize that a song can lose its sparkle just because it became popular. I'm not a hipster, so why the f§#% do I care what others think of that song??
The thing is.. the song stays the same, it's just your relation to it that changed. It once was something special. Now it's one of many.
In the past few months, I often thought about this "dilemma" and how you deal with it.
-------------
There are two things to keep in mind.
1) If you REALLY like a new, rising artist and what he/she does, you should also like that his/her music becomes popular - because that way, the cds/mp3s sell better and the artist gets more money to keep on making what he/she does best.
2) You're always talking about a particular song or the music you like, maybe even sharing it on twitter/facebook/etc. ...So why be shattered by the success? Good things become better when you share them.. More or less.. Right? ... 'o.o'

So here are a few songs where the exact same thing happened to me. I LOVED the songs and then they became popular. and now I'm struggling to "re-enjoy" them again. But hey - some of them are kind of "old" by now, so that's hipster-ish again, isn't it?!... :D

Let's start with the ultimate "good" mainstream song of 2011/2012 - Gotye feat. Kimbra - Somebody That I Used to Know. A song, that got stuck in my heart and always will be - no matter what. A song, that I sang on my way home, crying like a little b§#%$ on a cold winter's night. Two artists that fascinate and inspire me. It's THE song.... And everybody knows it by now -.-''

Aaaaaah. The next one is a good one, too. "Iron" by Woodkid. Talking 'bout the fusion of art and music. Powerful lyrics. And one of my favorite models, Agyness Deyn, is featured as well :D

And now the queen of soul-pop. Adele. "Rolling in the deep"... Do I need to say more??

...To conclude this short list of "good" mainstream songs: Lana Del Rey's "Born To Die"... No, I didn't want to choose her song "Video Games" .. because she, in fact, became populer with "Video Games" all around the world - but "Born To Die" was the one that made her famous here in good ol' Germany ;)

Sooooooo... that's it for now, guys... The next posts will include less videos and more mp3-links (soundcloud and the like) ... and MOOOORE INDIE/ELECTRO!!!!! ;D

Introducing Myself...

Once upon a time, there was a Youtube-channel called "maximiwax" - just like this blog. On this channel, many great videos of songs and musicians had been uploaded week after week after week. And when it suddenly seemed to be worth the work, Youtube blocked maximiwax' (MY!!) account.
Oh what a sad, sad day.

And now - almost a year later - I, maximiwax, am going to continue my work! This blog will be my valve, my art, my passion. If everything goes according to plan.

...
Ok.. This was just a quick introduction. Let's see how things work and whether I'm able to create something here or not. 'Cuz I'm a noob after all ;)

Greetings
